Sorochyntsy Annual Fair

The last decade of August is known as the date of Sorochyntsy Annual Fair in Ukraine. A swirl of colors, masterpieces of embroidery, pottery, black-smithing, painting, textile goods, hand-made gifts and national souvenirs create the unique atmosphere of the past and present trends. Every last August decade in village of Velyki Sorochyntsy all the best artists and masters are honored to take part in Sorochintsy Annual Fair and deliberately demonstrate their virtuosity.

The tradition of holding the fair between cities of Mirgorod and Poltava takes its roots from the 19th century. Velyki Sorochyntsy (Great Sorochyntsy) is deservedly noted throughout Ukraine as the place of the most colorful fair in the country. Sorochyntsy Fair obtained the great popularity thanks to the “Sorochyntsy Fair” novel by Nikolai Gogol, the famous Russian writer of the first half of the 19th century. He was born in Velyki Sorochyntsi , Ukraine, and represented his native village in his immortal masterpieces. The action of Gogol’s stories often takes place in Poltavsky region and even imaginary creatures like witches, demons, witchers, drowned woman have distinctive features of locals and Ukrainian people at all. He describes the life of Ukrainian nation in 19th century; their problems, patterns, way of life, traditional foundations of Ukrainian community and such beautiful national features as sense of humor, generosity and goodness inexhaustible.

Sorochyntsy Fair was just a usual market where local masters sold their crafts. After its renewing, the Fair became one of those events where the present goes always hand in hand with the past. Today Sorochyntsy Fair is considered to be the biggest and most famous fair in Ukraine. Even heads of State, Representatives of Governments and the officials think visiting the Fair their duty.  Nowadays Sorochyntsy Fair is not only the place where you can buy anything whatever you may dream about or just come to have a good time with charming Ukrainian lady enjoying breathtaking sights. Today the Fair becomes the place of art fest and territory of trade craftsmen, folk singers, artists, dancers and creative people and is believed to glorify the national traditions.
