Andrew's Descent - a Place of Tourist Pilgrimage

There is a legend that the place where Dnieper now flows was the sea. When St. Andrew came to Kiev and put it on the mountain, where now stands the church of St. Andrew’s cross, all the sea went down. But some part of it remained hidden under Andrew’s mountain. The St. Andrew’s Church has no bells because, according to the legend, at the first impact water would awake and flood not only Kyiv, but also all the Left Bank.

Andrew’s descent – is a street-museum, one of the main tourist attractions of the Ukrainian capital.

Many years ago here lived and worked many famous figures of science and culture: scientists, writers, composers, painters, sculptors. On this street very often especial in summer take place: feasts, art exhibitions and art festivals. People come here to look at the street musicians, and see the costume show in the open air.

The buildings along the street, art galleries, exhibitions, theater and art workshops are working here. On the street there are St. Andrew’s Church, the Museum of one street, writer Mikhail Bulgakov’s Museum, Castle of Richard the Lion heart, the memorial house-museum Kavaleridze and many other curious buildings.

Walking on the St. Andrew’s descent is nice in any weather. It is especially beautiful in summer. Descent, in spite of the dominance of traders, consistently keeps the spirit of ancient Kiev – a unique atmosphere of old houses, and preserves the ancient hills, through which at the time was leading paved winding road, linking the Upper and Lower Town.

We advise to set up the walk from the bottom of the descent – here you can walk 5 minutes from the subway “Kontraktova area.”

The main property of the descent, of course – is St. Andrew’s Church, which soars over Kiev. It was built by order of Empress Catherine II, according to the project by Bartolomeo Rastrelli. It is said that the temple terrace – enchanted, and who visit here fall in love with Kyiv forever.
