In Slavic countries various traditional and religious holidays are highly appreciated. Thus, on the 14th of October the whole Eastern Orthodox Church is celebrating the Intercession of the Theotokos, also known as Pokrov. It combines holy and native traditions.
In ancient times, at this month countrymen were completing harvesting. They believed that on the 14th of October autumn and winter met each other. Besides, young women began to prepare for marriage. Usually, the brocages were over and the celebration could begin, as all hard work in fields was over and people were free to have fun, rest and vacation.
Another tradition of this day for ladies is to cover head with kerchief to attract protection of Virgin Mary. Traditions injoin to have have fun, as spending day this way will help to meet the future husband. This days ladies also do their best to protect their homes. There are a few traditions concerning this aspect. For example, they need to bake pancakes to get cold winds away from homes. Or they must burn dry apple branches to keep warmth till spring.
For those who is already married, Pokrov also has good omen. If there is snow this day, their marriage will be long and happy. And the more snow has fallen this day, the more couples will get married next year, so follow this sign, maybe it concerns exactly you!
