Where did the tradition of wearing an engagement ring come from?

Rings were worn in ancient Egypt. There was even a hieroglyph in the shape of a ring meaning infinity. Egypt can be considered as the source of the wedding tradition of the lovers’ betrothal. Here, in the valleys of the fertile Nile under the blessed sun, one of the oldest civilizations on the Earth blossomed. Many of the traditions known to us originated here, including traditions of betrothal and wedding. Egyptians in love wore engagement rings on the middle finger of their left hand.

In ancient Rome there were rings also, but they were worn only by women. Betrothal took place long before the wedding – the groom put on the hand of his bride an iron ring which she had to wear before marriage, so that everyone could see if the girl was already engaged. After the wedding the groom took off an iron ring and put on a gold ring.

In the Jewish tradition the groom gave the bride not a ring but a gold coin as a sign of his serious intentions and symbol of his prosperity. The engagement ring was always made of gold and was already worn by the bride at the wedding.
