One of the modern society’s hallmarks is the availability of a variety of technical devices that firmly occupy our lives, especially lives of representatives of the more “advanced” generation. TV, computer, audio and video equipment become the whole world for a small child. Therefore, the child will probably look at the stories on home video or in a comfortable cinema, than he will read or listen.
Let’s try to analyze several popular modern fairy-tales for girls which over the past two or three years have been actively advertised in the film distribution and are in almost every home video library. Let’s take different genres of children’s films: an animated film, a movie and a cartoon.
A well-known animation film “Shrek” in three parts has gained wide popularity. There are a lot of different products have been created, based on this film, e.i. computer games for children, carnival costumes, toys, etc.. The main characters of this animated trilogy are Shrek, a green monster who lives on the swamp and scares people, and the beautiful Princess Fiona, who lives in a beautiful castle, but is under an evil spell, every night she turns into a terrible green monster like Shrek.
Analyzing the behavior of Princess Fiona, it can be noted that she is brave, resourceful, owns the art of fighting and if necessary she can save her fiance from the robbers, get him food and cheer him up. And in the third part of the film, in general, it seems to us that she is a warrior woman who leads a partisan detachment and fights as fearlessly as men, even defeating many of them! Love between the main characters arises exactly at the moment when they are figuring out who is more stronger. But at the end of the movie everything returns to normal and the film ends with a quiet family life in a big happy family.
Next popular film for children, which has collected a huge box office receipts in the global film distribution, is a fabulous movie of Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.” The film is based on the well-known fairy story book of Lewis Carroll, which became a bestseller and became one of the favorite books of the children all over the world. But Tim Burton had slightly rewritten and supplemented the plot, presenting the audience with another more modern version of the tale about Alice. According to the director, Wonderland is not a fun and bright place as Carroll describes it. This is a gloomy world in which there are huge toadstools and terrible crooked trees grow. The main character Alice falls into Wonderland in the day of her engagement, where is the path of the hero and wins the terrible dragon in the battle, thereby freeing the Looking Glass from brutal reign of the Red Queen. After returning home, Alice refuses to marry and decides to go into business with a former partner of her father (he generates a lot of creative ideas), and she is off to meet his dream.
And the last, we will consider the popular cartoon “Tangled”, which was based on the well-known classic fairy tale of the Brothers Grimm “Rapunzel”. It should be noted that the creators of the studio Disney also slightly rewrote a well-known fairy-tale plot in which the heroine no longer waits for the beautiful prince to release her from captivity in the big tower, and she herself develops a plan that helps her to leave the tower, using the attractive robber Flynn as a ticket to the big world. And so, Rapunzel is a beautiful princess who has 21 meters of golden magic hair and a great desire to see bright flashlights, and for this purpose goes to an interesting adventure in which she rescues Flynn from robbers, from an annoying white horse and even from death. At the end of the film Rapunzel loses her magic hair and stays with a short haircut like a boy, which allows her to break with the old life in which she was doomed to live a quiet and solitary life.
Thus, after analyzing modern children’s video productions, we see that each director sought to remake the story in his own way. What for? Why can not we just take a classic fairy tale and make a bestseller out of it? Maybe because modern society offers women a different role repertoire?
The conditions of modern life require more active behavior from women. In our time, it is more and more difficult to achieve success in different spheres of life for a shy and modest woman. Conversely, there are wide opportunities and many interesting vacancies for confident and active women, that were previously considered to be exclusively masculine. As we said earlier, such a social situation can not but affect the psychological state of a woman and leads to internal conflicts.
