The World Whale And Dolphin Day: Safe The Marine Mammals

Since his appearance on the Earth human race used natural resources and exterminated plants and animals without any control or anxiety. This way led us to say consequences: nowadays our planet is not so wonderful as it was even a hundred years ago. During this time people destroyed a lot of wonderful corners of the Earth and were instrumental in disappearance of many different types of plants and animals.

Some of animals that now are on the verge of extinction – whales and dolphins that need to be protected from killing. The 23th of July is a date established in 1986 by the UK-based Cetacea Defence as a World Whale And Dolphin Day, day of marine mammals protection.Only few types of animals in the world are so clever and interesting as marine mammals. But also only few types of animals in the world were exterminating by people so cruelly and successively. And now different types of whales and dolphins are stressed and some of them still are on the verge of extinction.

The objects of whaling were such products as whale’s meat, baleen, fat and the most expensive substance, ambergris. Even after ban of using these things different world countries still offer some products like whale meat that served in some Japan restaurants.Almost 2 centuries of catching and killing caused stable reduction of marine mammals’ population. In spite of moratorium on whaling imposed in many countries, more than 1000 whales and dolphins still being killed every day worldwide for commercial purposes. So today these big and charismatic animals still need support and protection from killing.

But not only whaling is a reason of marine mammals disappearance. The change of ocean temperature in association with the Global Warming, toxic contaminations of the sea water, ships’ accidents, oil and gas development – all these stresses affect negatively to the population of the whales and dolphins.

“Without collaboration we will achieve nothing more than a drop in the ocean”, said ocean explorer Jean-Michel Cousteau. That’s why nowadays the world society need to organize global network working together to protect marine mammals.

Ukrainian environmental organizations also work for support of marine mammals of the Black Sea: bottlenose dolphin, short-beaked common dolphin and harbor porpoises. And Ukrainian ladies on Step2Love who love our planet and also understand the importance of the salvation of its variety, are also glad to support the movement for the protection of these beautiful and clever animals.
