His Majesty Sandwich

Life is like a sandwich – the more you add to it, the better it becomes.

Hey everybody! The last summer month is coming into its own and we are pleased to declare August as the Sandwich month. Though we celebrate National Sandwich Day in November, 3rd, today we offer learning something new and interesting about such the easiest food treat as sandwich.

Have you ever wonder why sandwich has so strange name? There is a funny legend about it. There was a man called John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich, an 18th-century English aristocrat and statesman. He was awfully fond of gambling and was annoyed about the breaking off the game for eating. While a 24-hour poker game John asked his servant to put the roast beef between two pieces of bread. This process had its effect: John Montagu could continue his gambling and simultaneously eat, holding this kind of snack in his hand. The main motive force of progress is not without reason considered to be a sheer laziness, lol…

The amusing part of it is that the Sandwich Islands (now Hawaii) were also named after John Montagu, in 1778. However the 4th Earl of Sandwich could have had anything to do with the town of Sandwich in Kent named after Saxon words meaning ‘sandy place’.

Today various sandwiches have become a typical either American or European lunch or snack. According to food experts, Americans eat more than 300 million sandwiches every day and the average American eats nearly 193 sandwiches a year. There thus are a plenty of different variations of sandwich, including Philadelphia cheesesteak, Club sandwich, Monte Cristo, Peanut butter and jelly sandwich (as known as PBJ), Reuben, Sloppy joe and Submarine sandwich. Ukrainian girls prefer Subway and Monte Cristo sandwiches. But this list is only a small part of the total amount of a huge range of sandwich kinds that you can see on menus and in homes. It should be mentioned that the best side of sandwiches is that there’s no exact recipe for making a great sandwich. Everyone has the own personal point of view of how to make a tasty sandwich. So the very sandwich may serve the perfect example to illustrate your creativity in culinary science. Perhaps you should do it right now.
