This day was established in 1972 by Richard Nixon, the 37th US President. “I urge all citizens to join with outdoor sportsmen in the wise use of our natural resources and in insuring their proper management for the benefit of future generations”, he wrote. But the very beginning of the celebration of this event had its start from the state of Pennsylvania. Ira Joffe, the owner of Joffe’s Gun Shop in Upper Darby, Pa, was the first enthusiast to suggest a special day of thanks to sportsmen efforts and their contribution for nature conservation. Then, Raymond Shafer, the 39th Governor of Pennsylvania, used the perfect idea of such celebration and started “Sportsman’s Day” in the state of Pennsylvania. Over the years, National Hunting and Fishing Day became famous event. A lot of celebrities among them George Bush, Terry Bradshaw, Tracy Byrd, and many others who are fond of fishing, camping and hunting are involved as volunteers in promotion of this National Day.
Hunting and Fishing Day is considered to be a family event, as a rule. It is devoted to better people’s understanding of such outdoor activities as hiking, hunting, bird watching and fishing. More than 39 million Americans hunt and fish – this number exceeds the golf players! By the way, women are equal men in hunting. According to last researches of National Sporting Goods Association, the number of women hunting with firearms jumped more than 70 percent, and female target shooters increased to almost 5 million.
