This professional holiday is celebrated on 30th of September on the feast of St. Jerome. His name was Eusebius Sophronius Hieronymus and he was known as priest, theologian and historian. But best he is known for his translation of the Bible into Latin (this translation was recognized 11 centuries later as the official version of the Bible: the Vulgate) and original commentaries on the Old and New Testament. Saint Jerome is commemorated on 30 September; this is why because interpreters and translators mark this date as their professional holiday and the Feast Day of the patron saint of librarians (yes, today is Librarian Day also!), translators and interpreters.
International Translation Day was set up in 1991 by FIT (Federation internationale des traducteurs) in order to consolidate the efforts of translators and to focus on the importance of their work. This annual event has also an annual motto (2010 – “Quality Standard for a Variety of Voices”, 2011 – “Bridging Cultures”).
