Hi everyone! Well, let’s have a talk about one of the most ancient kinds of collecting as postcards. Do you like it? Do you collect it? Are you fond of postcrossing? And does deltiology mean much for you? If so, today is certainly an important date to mark. Today is Postcard Day!
October 1st is International Postcard Day. According to historical references, the first postcard was sent on October, 1st, 1869, departing from a Viennese postal office in Austria. Dr. Emanuel Hermann, an Austrian national economist, proposed the idea of first postal card as well as made this idea a reality. On this date, October 1, the first government postcard came into the world. First Austrian postal cards were known as “the Correspondence Card” and had become instantly fashionable. After being issued, about 3 million postal cards were sold for the first three months. The postcard fever had complete hold of neighboring countries.
The first postal government cards were printed with no pictures, with imprinted stamp only. In fact, the postal cards, proposed by Dr.Hermann, contained a 2-Kreuzer postage stamp and only 20 words (including sender’s signature and address). Later, pioneer cards, the advertising postcards, picture multicolored cards, multiview picture postcards appeared. The first delivered postcards are considered valuable assets today: one of such cards was auctioned in the UK for about 50,000 USD. Postcards are collected and carefully preserved. Postcard collectors are called Deltiologists, and they are absorbed in a process.
Postcards may be photographic, artistic, limited collection or ever personalized (yeah, you can design your personal postcard, with your photo or picture). Postcards are perfect travel souvenirs, memorabilia for scrapbooking and just the best thing to greet someone, to show care and attention. Celebrate Postcard Day by mailing a beautiful or silly virtual postcard to someone really special – to a gorgeous Russian lady today.
