World Smile Day

Start every day with smile and get it over with.

Yes, today is the first Friday of October, and today is a great day! Today is World Smile Day, day of positive energy of smiling!

The motto of this day: “Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile”. What does it mean? Well, it’s quite simple, really. Even if you do your best to make one person smile, you can make the world happier.

The image of this day: the yellow smiley face.

World Smile Day is annually celebrated on the first Friday of October and is closely connected with the name of Harvey Ball, an American commercial artist. His name because of his designer creative idea would not be forgotten. Today the smiley face is considered the most recognizable symbol of good cheer, good mood and good humor all over the world. It became really international: you may not know the certain foreign language, but you always understand what the respondent wants to say with the help of different smiles. No one can exactly know how many kinds of smile exist. In fact, we know that the smiley face was created in 1963 by Harvey Ball. He was employed as a freelance artist by State Mutual Life Assurance Company of Worcester, Massachusetts, to design a remembered and colorful symbol of the Company. This symbol was intended to raise the morale of the employees, i.e. to make them smile when doing their tasks, but it immediately became super-popular. The artist firstly drew a smile, but he was not satisfied with the poor result. He improved it by adding eyes and smiling mouth. Harvey Ball designed the yellow smiley face in ten minutes only and was paid $45 for this.

Over the years Ball understood the fact his design had lost its meaning because of its commercialization. Then he came to the idea of a special Smile Day – a day when people should try to smile and act kindly. Since 1999, when the first World Smile Day was held, this celebration has been held every year. You can perfectly celebrate this idea. For example, to send “You’ve been smiled” e-Certificate to your beloved Russian lady, or to write her a kind-hearted message with numerous smiley faces in it. Enjoy World Smile Day – share your good mood with the people around you! It makes them to feel really great!
