Sydney Opera House – One of the Most Breathtaking Buildings in the World

Hi everyone! Have you ever wondered about what image is associated with Australia in your mind? Kangaroo? Waltzing Matilda? Great Barrier Reef? Steve Irwin and “Croc Hunters”? Yummy accents? But however that may be, there is no doubt that Sydney (Royal) Opera House is among them. Every person wants to see this architectural wonder with his own eyes, and Russian ladies are no exception. Today is the 20th of October, and today the Sydney Opera House is celebrating the 40th birthday from the day of its official opening. The building of Sydney Opera House is considered to be a symbol of Australia and one of the masterpieces of modern world architecture.

Sydney Opera House is among a number of the most famous iconic landmarks, such as the Coliseum, the Eiffel Tower and the House of the British Parliament. The sailing white wings of the Sydney Opera House, this architectural masterpiece made infamous about 50 years earlier Jorn Utzon, the Danish architect. He designed the Opera building without having visited Australia. The famous range of white (shells) yachts in Sydney Harbor actually houses the Concert Hall, the Drama Theatre, the Playhouse, the Studio, the Utzon Room, the Joan Sutherland Theatre and the Forecourt. The total costs of construction were estimated at $8 million, later this amount grew to the final $104 million. The Opera House took 14 years to be constructed, and paid for by national lottery sums. Jorn Utzon, the architect, was not invited to the opening, nor was his name said during the ceremony, because of different problems during construction.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II opened the building of Sydney Opera House on October 20th, 1973, and in honor of this event today the “Cake and Song” spectacle is on. The House is open to everyone who would like to enjoy the 40th birthday party. There are a lot of events to celebrate it, including a visit by Princess Mary and Prince Frederik of Denmark. The 40th Anniversary Concert will be closed with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra performing the Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. This music masterpiece opened the Opera House 40 years ago, in October 1973.
