Nylon

Hello everyone! Today is the celebration of one of the most appealing inventions in the world. This invention is now used to make a lot of things; among them are computers, carpets, furniture, swimwear, umbrellas, combat uniforms, windbreakers, draperies and many others, including spare parts of human body. At the very beginning of its way nylon was primarily used in the making tires and parachutes. But the most prominent is the use of nylon in the making of women’ stockings.

Also, such no doubt useful thing was invented in the 1930s. Charles Stine, a vice president of Du Pont Inc., announced this news on October 27, 1938. It was invented by Julian Hill, an American chemist. The main advantages of such an invention were quite obvious: it was elastic and strong, it dried in a moment, it retained its shape and – oh yes! – it was awfully cheap. Success of nylon was assured. The Du Pont and Company started the first commercial production of nylon in 1939 in the United States. Wallace H. Carothers, a chemist of the Du Pont, with his team was considered to be the leader in the development of nylon. Immediately this invention became popular because of women. In more precise terms, it became popular because of ladies’ stockings. Stine proclaimed, that “… nylon can be fashioned into filaments as strong as steel, as fine as a spider’s web, yet more elastic than any of the common natural fibers”. Ladies were in a sort of ecstasy – they thought Stine meant indestructible stockings.

The problem with ladies’ stockings was really dreadful at those times. Silk stockings were rather expensive and fragile as well. So when nylon was invented, it immediately was used in stockings’ making. Commercial production of nylon stockings began in 1939 and over 64 million pairs has been sold by the end of 1940. Unfortunately, the Second World War started, and nylon became to be used in more practical purposes, such as used for tracks, parachutes and important components of bombs. But however that may be, there is no doubt that the best present for ladies was believed to be a pair or two of nylon stockings during the war.

Today nylon is used in many spheres of human life, from medicine to computer technologies. Nylon clothing continues to be the cheapest and the strongest in the world. And ladies all over the world – especially Russian ladies who know their way around the styles and fashions – go crazy because of high-classed fashionable nylon stockings. They might be right in this feeling – the sight is priceless!
