The history of Ukrainian state was neither not easy nor ordinary (as well as the history of any other state). But it is interesting that some places, seems, are protected by mystical power. Maybe it was a power of eternal love? Who knows! Visit one of such places, Mansion in Ukrainian Kachanivka not far from Kyiv, in Chernigiv Oblast (region) and maybe this power will make you happy!
Story of this splendid mansion built in style of classicism began in the middle of 1770s. This amazing place with different beautiful outbuildings that formed a court of honor, was built by order of Count Rumyantsev. There was made a landscape park around the manor, with a pond, different arbors and statues.
After a century it was purchased by family of Ukrainian landlords Tarnovsky, proprietors of the greatest Ukrainian sugar factory. This family of Ukrainian Maecenases was famous by its passion to art and artists, that often were invited to this wonderful palace. So many Russian and Ukrainian poets, writers, painters, actors, singers, composers, scientists visited this mansion! Seems, the art of those years imbibed rustic spirit of this place, of its dark parkways, of reflections in the lakes, of heavy scent of oak leaves, of stone bridges, of breath-taking sunsets… Shevchenko and Gogol, Fedotov and Shternberg, Repin and Vrubel, Glinka and Gulak-Artemovsky visited this “Ukrainian Parnassus” and reflected its beauty in their works.
Story of the mansion also preserved one beautiful romantic legend. They say, one of the landlords organized the unprecedentedly luxurious wedding ceremony for his only daughter. To make her marriage the happiest in the world, he made her an exceptional surprise – bestrewed a long and wide parkway from their manor to the church with a few tons of the best sugar from his factory, like a sweet way to their eternal love. That was connected with an old Slavic belief that scattering some salt can make you big troubles but to scatter some sugar is a promise of happy and prosperous life.
They say, this magic power of love and happiness of the landlords protected their estate for a long harsh years of October Revolution and civil war, two world wars that ruined almost everything in Ukraine. The most part of Kachanivka Mansion was saved, including all the 15 buildings of manor! Some damages were repaired at present days and today this is a great National Museum. Nowadays it is also famous as a place for romantic wedding ceremonies with small church and welcoming hotel for guests of estate.
