As you may know, the date of February, 14, was first associated with romantic feelings by Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages. The history begins in Rome, where Valentine of Rome was believed to be a priest who married couples against the emperor’s orders; for the reason married soldiers couldn’t be drafted. He was imprisoned because of these actions. While imprisoning, according to an ancient legend, he healed the daughter of his jailer. Convicted to death, he was believed to write her a last passionate letter signed “From Your Valentine” as a farewell. Since then this holiday has been supposed to be a day of love and happiness. Even though St. Valentin was executed, his idea continued to exist.
The idea, by the way, is arguable enough today – whether this holiday is true devoted to romantic love and passion, or it is a manipulative date, consumer-oriented and more actuated by prudence than by either love or happiness. Ladies absolutely adore this holiday because of surprises and signs of attention, flowers sent from admirers, heart shaped chocolates or traditional gifts. But men are sometimes surprised considering this date retailer’s time only. There are even anti-Valentines activists promote sale gifts and goods this day. But however that may be, there is no doubt that to be romantic and generous on Valentine’s Day is worth annoying heart-shaped cards everywhere, in this delightful day of passion, affection and of course, LOVE!
