The House with Chimeras was built in 1901-1902 by famous Kiyv architect Vladislav Gorodetsky under the guidance of Ukrainian engineer Anton Strauss. In this project he wanted to show the possibilities of new and expensive material – concrete and its properties.
They created a fabulous building of Modern style. Because of the location of this area at the slope of the hill the house consists of 3 floors from one side and of 6 floors from another one. But the most interesting is decoration of the house, astonishing animals, birds, sea creatures and other real and chimerical creatures.
There is a theory that the architect Gorodetsky hid a secret sense in the decoration of his creature. Years ago people connected it with Masons and other secret organizations. But researchers came to conclusion that the decoration of the House with Chimeras expresses the dream of architect – African safari. And the House with Chimeras shows the African mountain massif with charming mountain lake and waterfall. There are all the signs of African veld here: elephants, gazelles, rhinoceroses, lioness and eagle, giraffes, crocodiles, antelopes, pythons, giant toads and so on. In the hall the guest turns out at a lake bed, with fishes, dolphins, octopus and other lake and sea creatures. This extraordinary and marvelous decoration really impresses everyone!
The house was finished in a year, unbelievably fast. They say, the architect Gorodetsky made a bet that he will build it within a year thanks to the new material, concrete. His friends couldn’t believe that but he really made it to the specified time. So architect won a bet. He invested a lot of money to this project and hoped compensate this investment renting out the house. But this strange mansion, seemed, scared the renters so in a few years Gorodetsky had to sell the House with Chimeras.
