Getting driver’s license in United States is very easy. Even if you already have any drivering experience and license of your country you need to get an American driver’s license according to requirements of state where you live.
My own experience was a little curious but any way I will never forget it.
Before I start let me say that I took my drive courses in Ukraine but my own experience was as a zero. By that time I knew a lot about a car: it has gas and brake pedals, steering wheel, lights, left and right turn signals, windshields, emergency signal, etc. So I was really educated about it (except experience of driving car around the city). I used to drive a car in Ukraine but only 20 one-hour lessons with angry instructor.
There is no good public transportation in US, especially in place where we were living. So almost everybody has a car and can drive. I had to learn how to drive too.
Without my American driver’s permit my brave husband decided to show me how it can be easy to drive my new Honda!
” Don’t worry, you’ll be ok”- he said. I was scared a little but took driver’s sit and turned ignition on. Never show your fears to anybody! Let people know that there is nothing impossible for you. I was ready to conquer my first “mountain’s top”.
Everything was pretty wonderful. I was driving empty road in residential area with 30 MPH speed and felt like a queen of the road! I got it!
Everything was great until I reached the end of a road before the bridge. I had to make three point turn to get back…
Now I know what it means… but then…
My husband tried to explain me how to do that and which direction I have to choose for turning my steering wheel. But I was so scared and worried! I finally mixed pedals and suddenly pressed gas instead brake pedal. Ooh Jesus! We just flew away from the edge of the road to mangroves trees!
I can’t describe all my felling of shame and helplessness… We just got stuck there. I wanted to cry, yell and be excused by my husband. I expected for any blames from him but he was calm and confident.
There were some people fishing from the bridge. They immediately run down towards us to ask if we need any help. Other drivers who were passing by our “unhappy” car in that moment also offered some help. It was really pleased.
” How nice these American people are! ” – I was thinking dropping my tears….
“Don’t worry!”- my husband said absolutely calmly and called to emergency service AAA.
As I learn later you can call them from any part of United States in any case. For using this kind of insurance you pay every year approximately 80-100 dollars per year.
Well, in just one hour we were rescued with professional guy and his “fantastic equipped” Toyota. He pulled our Honda and wished us good luck. It took him only 20 minutes. Happy end!
After this case I realized I need to get my driver’s permit and start to learn driving seriously.
For next two weeks “Florida driver’s book” became my number one book. I was assertive full of decisions to get my driver’s permit at first and license as next.
I passed all tests… My husband taught me driving. It wasn’t hard because driving in America it’s pleasure and enjoyment. All lanes are identified and divided properly, other drivers are polite. I really felt comfortable. After I gained my necessary day and night driving hours I started to pass my next test. It took me three times to pass it but I don’t have any regrets because I think that repeating and correcting your previous mistakes is your own valuable experience.
So only after half of year since I got my Florida driver’s license but I already was able to travel to Miami and Orlando using sophisticated highways and interstate road and was oriented keeping my speed according to the signs. I’m still amazed about road’s condition in US: it’s smooth surface. Just follow the rules, don’t make any violations and you’ll be comfortable with your driving.
Of course I still have my minor problems with parking in crowded places but as many Americans said – it takes time and I trust them. I know – I can, I will….
Someday I’ll be a number one driver!
