How often do you usually say “thank you” to people around you?
According to psychologists, every day we should make a list of things what we are thankful for! And also we should say “thank you” as often as possible because this word has a power to turn negative energy to positive and that could make us feel better and even change our life!
January 11 is the most “polite” day of the year, because this day people celebrate the International Thank you day.People get used to say “thank you” and don’t think much about meaning of this word.
According to dictionaries, the word “thank” derives from Old English “pancian” (with the meaning “to give thanks”), which in turn derives from the Proto-German term “thankojan”, which also spawned the Middle German term “danken” (with the meaning “to thank”). It’s unbelievable, but Ukrainian word “dyakuyu”(дякую) has the same origin! So it proved that people from everywhere say “thank you” and mean almost the same. Except for the Russian word “spasibo” (спасибо), which appeared at the 16th century and meant “Let God save you”? So it’s more traditional to answer “not at all”(не за что), because you are saying sort of “I didn’t do anything wrong”. But of course it is the ancient meaning of this word so it is also correct to answer “you are welcome” (пожалуйста).
By the way, Russian word “pogaluysta” (пожалуйста) is a little bit complicated for foreigners because it has 2 different meanings: “you are welcome” and “please”.In Ukrainian language your answers to “dyakuyu” can be “proshu” and “bud’ laska”.There is another word in Russian language with is also used for gratitude – “blagodaryu” (благодарю). It means “I give you good”. This word is used less often than “spasibo”, but it sounds very polite and respectfully. By the way, September 21 is the Word Gratitude day.
John F. Kennedy once said: “We must find time to stop and thank the people who make a difference in our lives.”
Ukrainian ladies are very polite, so we do hope that a Ukrainian single woman will make a difference in your life and you’ll write at your list “What I should be thankful for”: “Meeting with the beautiful and intelligent Ukrainian lady”.
