TOUR GUIDE. What to See in Lviv (Part2)

1. Armenian quarter

Lviv became a refuge of Armenians back in the 13th century. Expelled from their lands, they were forced to seek for a new home. Armenian merchants and artisans were the first who arrived to the city of Leo. They settled compactly, so now all the sights owed by the Armenians are concentrated on the Armenian street. Probably the most famous of them is the Armenian Cathedral, built in 1370.

2. The Bernardine church and monastery

The church and monastery are the whole complex which is an architectural and historical monument now. It is interesting that the Bernardine monastery is not just a spiritual building, but also a defensive one. Bernardine church, or, as it is called the church of St. Andrew, has been erected for 60 years in 1660. It is interesting that the church was built not on the site of the old church, but above it. That means that the previous church was not destroyed, the new church was built over the old building. Only when the new building was erected, the old one was dismantled.

3. Chapel of Boim

The chapel was erected in the 17th century on the place of the old cemetery. It became a burial vault for the old Hungarian Boim family. Connoisseurs compare the Lviv chapel with the burial vault in Cracow’s Wawel. There are no more analogues of the Boim Chapel in Europe. It is easy enough to find this building even from afar. In addition to the almost black facade, it is distinguished by the sculpture of Jesus Christ on the dome. It is interesting that Jesus is depicted here sitting and propping his head with his hand.

4. “High Castle” Mountain

To be in Lviv and not to visit the High Castle is like not to see Khreshchatyk in Kiev. This is the highest point of the city of Leo. The height of the mountain is 413 meters. Once upon a time there was a castle on it. Castle Hill has become one of the most popular viewing sites for Lviv residents and visitors of the city.

5. Pharmacy Museum “Under the Black Eagle”

For centuries this place supports its reputation. For many years the pharmacy has managed to combine the medical component with a tourist one. After all, despite the fact that dozens of tourists visit the pharmacy every day, they do not stop selling medications here. If tourists are enthusiastically considering all kinds of cones, grass cutters, tablet machines, the citizens come here for what the doctor attributed. This pharmacy has been working since 1735.
